PARENTS

There are many ways in which you can offer support to your child while s/he is in the process of developing skills and reaching the therapy goals:

Acknowledge his/her strengths, validate the skills s/he does have and celebrate the things s/he CAN do
Keep your expectations reasonable
Eliminate any pressure for him/her to perform in a certain way or at a certain level
Believe in your child: Your enthusiasm for the smallest of his/her achievements will go a long way!
It is very important that your child feels you are on his/her side, ready to encourage him/her and celebrate his/her progress. Infinite Services will create a comprehensive plan for your child to develop the necessary skills to reach developmental milestones, sustain progress and reach his/her highest potential.

If your child is between the ages of 3 and 5 years old, here are some ways in which you can support your child throughout the therapy process:

IF YOUR CHILD IS RECEIVING SPEECH-LANGUAGE THERAPY:
Use YOUR Words: Talk, Talk and Talk some more! Children will imitate your behavior, will listen when you speak to them and develop their language skills as they see YOU using them!

Describe things: Speak with him/her about the activity you are involved in at the moment: ”Isn’t it nice to walk outside?”, "Look the snow is melting!”

You can ask him/her to come up with a different ending! Make sure to change books often to offer the most variety … and most cognitive stimulation!

Read to your child: You can ask him/her to share with you a song he learned in school, or teach him/her one of your favorite childhood songs

IF YOUR CHILD IS BILINGUAL: Encourage the use of words in his/her first language, and celebrate his cultural heritage. This will enrich not only the language skills, but his/her self-confidence!

IF YOUR CHILD IS RECEIVING OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY:
Some of the simplest activities like sorting and matching games are a great way to stimulate your child’s cognitive development.

Encourage your child to play with puzzles and matching games to develop and enhance memory skills while learning and practicing concepts such as part/whole, classification, same/different and problem solving.

Cooking together with your child is a great opportunity to bond and help him acquire fine motor skills by using a measuring cup, measuring spoons, helping you mix and pour and certainly helping you knead that dough!

IF YOUR CHILD IS RECEIVING PHYSICAL THERAPY:
Have fun with your child marching around the house, jumping and dancing to your favorite tune!

A park, the school playground and even your own backyard are great places for your child to get active and experience physical challenges like climbing, moving his/her legs as s/he kicks a ball, moving his/her arms as s/he tries to catch it.

• Introduce your child to the fun of a tricycle!: It will help him/her coordinate his/her legs as s/he learns to pedal.

• Practice with your child throwing a ball as s/he attempts to catch it.

• Encourage your child to seat him/herself on a swing, initiating and keeping the movement.

TO CULTIVATE AND NURTURE YOUR CHILD’S SOCIAL EMOTIONAL SKILLS:
Remember that role modeling is the best way to teach desirable skills and behaviors: Children are natural imitators!

Encourage and celebrate independence: When possible, allow your child to make choices ("which sweater would you like to wear, the blue or the pink one?"). Keep safe objects reachable for your child to select (the blue or the red plastic cup) and to develop a healthy sense of personal preference.

Remain aware of how you handle stressful situations: Remember, you are your child’s 24/7 teacher, coach and mentor!
